Citing the 1960s moonshot as inspiration, Prince William’s Royal Foundation in Great Britain has spent a year planning a multi-million pound, 10-year Earthshot Prize initiative designed to tackle the biggest issues facing the planet: climate and energy, nature and biodiversity, oceans, air pollution and fresh water.
Designed to motivate and inspire, the Earthshot challenges will be announced in special events around the globe and an annual awards ceremony will take place in different cities around the globe each year between 2021 and 2030. Five individual or team winners will be chosen every year who represent progress across all sectors of industry and society, not just technology. The initiative’s goal is to provide at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest problems by 2030, with particular attention paid to communities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. |
Perhaps the Earthshot Prize, just like the original moonshot, will succeed in joining people around the world together with a sense of shared humanity on our fragile planet, sparking a new era of collaborative achievement.
